“Scroll of the Ukrainian Will”

A “scroll” is a long piece of cloth that is stored in a rolled-up form, and is also an image of a chain of successive events, impressions, thoughts, dreams - the fluidity of being. The Scroll project is the course of the formative events of independent Ukraine, where society actively speaks and defends its identity, freedom, and dreams. The Scroll is a kind of almanac of the formation of national statehood - the Orange Revolution of 2004, the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-2014, and Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This is a story about the pain and experience that Ukrainians went through during the revolutions of 2004 and 2013-2014, but quickly forgot and returned to their normal lives downstream. The society did not think about or reflect sufficiently on their newly established achievements of national unity and values. Without realizing the consequences of quickly returning to everyday life, they referred to almost the beginning of the country's national formation, and in a few years again faced pro-Russian forces of soft invasion. Now we have to realize and live through the war of today and consciously crystallize unifying values, our future narrative, and the dream of where we are headed.

The project “Scroll of Memory and Dreams” is a way to rethink the stages of our formation and outline the goals, steps where, how and with whom we will build the future. In 2004, during the Orange Revolution, the public from different regions of Ukraine composed an open letter to President Putin on Independence Square for the first time, expressing their position on his interaction with Ukraine and outlining their desired future vector of development. The open letter was compiled on an orange 65-meter scroll, which is on display in this exhibition hall. During the second Maidan of the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-2014, at the beginning of the stand, the community wrote a second open letter to President Yanukovych, expressing the desire of citizens to follow the European and democratic direction of the country's development. The “white” scroll was written by the community and handed over to the presidential administration for further submission to the European Union for consideration regarding Ukraine's further European integration. The fate of the White Scroll after its transfer to the presidential administration is currently unknown...
In June 2022, Ukrainians had the opportunity to jointly write the third new “Yellow” letter of Ukrainians to themselves: with the realization of who they are, common dreams of a future free and independent country with democratic values, with whom we walk alongside and on what values our unity blossoms, and for what we fight for our Victory.
Now, while the struggle for Freedom continues in Ukraine, we propose to write a new “Blue” letter in which Europeans say what they are ready to give for their freedom and to support whatever each of them chooses. The exhibition project “The Scroll of the Ukrainian Will” was presented in Berlin in December 2022 at the Center for Contemporary Art “Hotel Continental”, in Warsaw in February 2023 and in Duren in December 2024.
